What does your company do?
I started the business offering graphic design services. For ex the design of corporate identities, marketing material, lay-out of school books etc. After completing a diploma in interior design in 2015, I added this service to the business too. I want to focus on offering green and sustainable interior design services. At the moment, I am also busy designing scatter cushions - making use of scrap fabrics to make beautiful new products (range called ‘You frill me’). Since March 2017, I've had the great opportunity of hosting an intern who is busy with a Green Learnership. Together, we have taken the above product idea from scratch and now we are very excited to hold the final product in our hands! Feedback has been positive and we have some orders already - yay! My goal with this idea is simple - use scrap fabrics, create jobs, make gorgeous new products.
What has been your biggest success?
I am very thankful for a few great moments/successes over the last 6 years. Building a client base from scratch and having clients spread the word of my services is a huge reward. One example is where publishers of school books mentioned my business to distributors of educational products. They made use of my services and mentioned me to their manufacturers in China! This led to me designing marketing material for the company in China! I also enjoy healthy business relationships with my clients - going the extra mile for them. I started the business from home, so moving into an office in 2014 was another big step for me. I love having this space where I can receive clients and where I can develop ideas to products. Another success is having the opportunity of transferring skills to my intern and the interest we already have in our products!
What has been your biggest hurdle?
You are responsible for almost every aspect of building your business and certain aspects can detract you from focusing on your core business - that can be tough. I am blessed to have support from family and friends and if the scope and deadline of a project is too much to handle by myself, I have a few great contacts to whom I can outsource certain tasks. I think one of the most challenging times was in 2013 when my mother was ill and had to undergo treatment. I took on a lot of the responsibility of taking care of her while keeping the business going. Even though I did not have a lot of time to spend on the business, something incredible happened ... the income for that year for the few projects I did, was more than the previous two years' income. The Lord provided!
