MOLECULAR IMAGING AND THERAPY LIMPOPO

What does your company do?

A nuclear Medicine Centre is a facility that offers diagnostic and treatment procedures for a certain kind of illnesses including diseases such as hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer, lymphomas, bone pain as well as other types of cancer. It is a wonderful tool to assess the function of a specific organ, and the modality can be used to diagnose anything from a bone fracture to a thyroid dysfunction or cancer. The process primarily involves radioactive formulas that have been prepared to target a specific cell or organ. The formula is injected into the body, after which a person will undergo a scan using gamma camera. The camera will pick up the concentrations of radioactivity in the body in and around specific cells and organs. The nuclear medicine scan complements traditional radiology. However, unlike radiology where you see the structure of an organ, in nuclear medicine you only see the functioning of a targeted set of cells.

What is your biggest success?

BEING ABLE TO OPEN MOLECULAR IMAGING AND THERAPY LIMPOPO CENTRE IN POLOKWANE AND TZANEEN WAS A BIGGEST SUCCESS BECAUSE PATIENTS BEFORE THEY WERE TRAVELLING PLUS MINUS 300KM FOR SCANS MOSTLY IN GAUTENG. OUR PATIENTS NOW DONT HAVE TO TRAVEL LONG DISTANCES TO GET THE SCANS AND BY OPENING THE CENTRES IN TZANEEN AND POLOKWANE WE REDUCED THEIR COSTS OF TRAVELLING AND THAT PUT SMILES ON OUR PATIENTS AND ITS A GREAT SUCCESS TO US.

What has been your biggest hurdle?

Startup capital. Being black, female and also in an under resourced province of Limpopo. I also faced challenge of disapproving negative assumptions and stereotypes, thus requiring me to work harder to gain recognition and opportunities.
