What does your company do?
Smart Little Brains is an after-school program located in the heart of Alexandra Township with the aim to alleviate illiteracy through instilling the love of reading for understanding by demystifying the English language in disadvantaged communities. We assist with homework & projects, a Career Day program which exposes them to different fields of careers & enthuses them to dream bigger than Alexandra, character building and out-of-class activities.
What is your biggest success?
We have two greatest achievements:
1.Boosting scholars' confidence when they finally understand a topic they have been taught at school, them knowing how to read and converse in English after realizing that it [English] was not as difficult as they had initially thought and seeing them respect themselves & those around them.
2. In our year of inception, we assisted a scholar who had a speech impairment learn how to speak through tongue exercises [without any formal training, may I add]. We are happy to say that he is now able to speak and be understood by everyone around which has been a great confidence booster for him as he would get frustrated when people would look at him with bewilderment when he tried to express himself.
What has been your biggest hurdle?
The biggest hurdle has to be space to house in all of our scholars as the organization is growing. Compliance, social media presence, minimal financial management knowledge and a lack of being held accountable has also been a problem as I am the proprietor and at times, I drag my feet to do things which leads to missed opportunities.
