Equaltalk
What does your company do?
Equaltalk’s mission is to enhance the physical and mental well-being of youth and women in underserved communities by addressing critical issues such as inequality, lack of youth development projects, teen-suicide and mental health. Our objective is to empower people, reduce anti-social behaviour and create a nurturing environment where they can thrive despite economic hardships.
The Social Problem Addressed.
Underserved communities often lack resources and activities to engage and inspire youth, contributing to feelings of neglect and isolation. This deficit leads to increased risks of mental health challenges, suicide among teens and gender-based violence. The pervasive poverty in these communities exacerbate inequality and fosters environments where anti-social behavior becomes prevalent
The Solution
Equaltalk provides holistic programs designed to bridge the gap in social ,emotional and educational resources to communities.
Our flagship program targeting primary school children is our “Tune your feelings program”. This program is a response to the world-health organization’s call to action to “start the conversation”. Equaltalk is well -positioned to start the conversation through the transformative power of music .This initiative is underpinned by provisioning of musical instruments and music teachers to create safe spaces where youth can express themselves, build resilience and develop essential life skills. Peer support ,workshops ,mentorships and community events are part of the holistic offering.
What is your biggest success?
We have so many achievements and we celebrate every milestone as a win.
Reaching 1600 kids to talk about the power of music.
Children signing up, we have 200 kids at our second targeted school who want to participate.
The eyes and smiles of the kids the first time they touch the pianos and guitars.
The attendence of the kids every day.
Collecting instruments from strangers and the joy they have in giving even if the donated instrument is sentimental or belonged to a child who committed suicide.
Seeing a piano being carted through a poor ares full of potholes and seeing the excitement of the staff.
Teachers coming in to sit and they also want to learn as they never had the opportunity to play a musical instrument.
A young team with some of them neuro-diverse, but the best attitudes and enthusiasm to bring joy to the world.
What has been your biggest hurdle?
The main hurdle is funding. the project to date is self-funded and draining at times.
a musical instrumental program is costly, music instruments need maintenance, transportation, safekeeping.
Also getting volunteers to sign up to teach is difficult as South Africa does not have a culture of volunteerism
