Gauteng Volleyball Union
What does your company do?
Gauteng Volleyball Union (GVU) is the organisation responsible for facilitating volleyball in Gauteng Province. Affiliated to the mother body for the sport, Volleyball South Africa. GVU creates platforms for volleyball players to compete at all levels, from schools to Provincial to National level. Coaches, referees and administrators of the sport are also developed by the Union and provided opportunities to grow and succeed.
What is your biggest success?
The greatest achievement is that I am the first, and only female President of a provincial volleyball federation in South Africa. Besides competing in the sport since my school days, I have been a member of the executive (as marketing director, general secretary, vice president, and now president) for over 14 years. In recent years I have been responsible for stabilising and re-establishing Gauteng as a leading province in the sport. Launching the GVU Pro-V Series, Inter-Regional Tournament as well as the Junior Beach Volleyball Development Programme in the last 2-3 years have been my greatest, and ongoing, achievements .
What has been your biggest hurdle?
The greatest challenge, in an environment that is heavily patriarchal and dominated by men, is leading and being respected as a woman. Besides the gender challenge, as is the case with all minor sports codes, the struggle for funding to support our initiatives and future growth is an ongoing challenge.
