What is your biggest success?
I was awarded the Top Forty Under 40 South Africa, Africa and Global awards in the category of law for my work in establishing a boutique black female-led commercial law firm (WMN Attorneys Inc). As the winner of an award that recognizes the world’s most audacious entrepreneurs, I am immensely proud, especially because I obtained this recognition and achievement by way of successfully providing specialist advice in a male-dominated industry, as a black-female owned law firm. In doing so, I am breaking the mold and shattering the glass ceiling for young black lawyers. Winning these awards can be seen as somewhat of a constant reminder that WMN Attorney Inc. is operating fully within its purpose and has only scratched the surface. I am both proud and humbled by how far my firm has come in only 4 years of incorporation.
What has been your biggest hurdle?
At the beginning of my courageous one-woman endeavour to establish WMN Attorneys Inc., I was met with countless rejection and had to endure many “NOs”. Coupled with this constant rejection (which most would ordinarily be disheartened by), my biggest hurdle has been successfully establishing and managing a black-female owned commercial-law firm which specializes in white-male dominated sectors such as infrastructure, mining, energy, oil & gas, real estate and technology. And yet, I was able to overcome this difficulty. Not only infiltrating but thriving in these male dominated spaces was not easy, but under no circumstances was I prepared to give up. Furthermore, the tragic and sudden loss of my father in January 2023 was, naturally, an immensely difficult time to manoeuvre through, all while running a successful and demanding commercial-law firm, with a team that depended on me.
