Philippi Village
What does your company do?
Philippi Village is a community-driven development hub that provides access to essential services, opportunities, and safe, vibrant spaces for residents of Philippi and surrounding townships. We connect people to training, education, health services, entrepreneurial support, and cultural programming — all in one inclusive, community-rooted environment. We also serve as a platform for small businesses, NGOs, and government to engage with and uplift the local community.
What is your biggest success?
My greatest achievment has been transforming Philippi Village into a nationally recognized hub of community-led innovation and opportunity. Situated in one of Cape Town’s most under-resourced areas, we co-created a 12-hectare development that now houses over 100 small businesses, a sound studio, a pop-up cinema, a sports complex, and critical health and education services. Through deep community engagement, we've built trust and fostered a sense of pride and ownership within Philippi. In 2024, our impact was recognised continentally when Philippi Village won the Forty Under 40 award for Best Social Enterprise in Africa. This success is a testament to the power of inclusive, people-first development that centres dignity, safety, and opportunity.
What has been your biggest hurdle?
The biggest hurdle has been balancing financial sustainability with the social mission in an underserved community where needs are high but resources are limited. As a space that offers subsidised services and free programming, it has been challenging to generate revenue while staying accessible. There have also been practical hurdles — such as safety concerns, inconsistent infrastructure, and limited government support — which impact both our community and operations. Navigating this while avoiding mission drift has required difficult decisions and strategic clarity. Yet, by implementing partner filters, refining our business model, and focusing on conscious exchange with tenants, we've begun shifting from reactive survival mode to proactive sustainability.
