31kmsOn31stDec Fun Run
What does your company do?
31kmsOn31stDec is a purpose-driven social enterprise that organizes an annual fun run event to raise funds for South Africa’s National Toll-Free Elder Abuse Helpline. The initiative transforms physical commitment into social impact by mobilizing individuals and communities to support the protection and dignity of older persons. The funds raised ensure that older people across the country have access to free, confidential counselling and are referred to appropriate services when facing abuse.
What is your biggest success?
One of the most significant milestones of 31kmsOn31stDec has been its ability to raise and donate over R100,000 towards the operation of the National Toll-Free Elder Abuse Helpline. This contribution has helped ensure that the helpline remains operational daily, staffed by trained counsellors who provide essential support and guidance to older persons in crisis. This achievement reflects the power of community-driven fundraising and the impact of consistent, purpose-led action.
What has been your biggest hurdle?
Despite its impact, 31kmsOn31stDec faces ongoing challenges in securing sponsorships. Events focused on older persons often struggle to attract corporate support, which limits the initiative’s ability to scale. Operating on a very limited budget, we are unable to employ full-time staff to assist with fundraising, planning, and event execution. This places a heavy burden on a small group of volunteers and restricts the initiative’s growth potential.
