What does your company do?
Koa Academy is an innovative online school based in South Africa, offering a fully accredited Independent Examinations Board (IEB) curriculum for learners in Grades 4 through 12.
What sets us apart is that we’re big on engagement. Our online ‘Pods’ of 8 learners to a teacher provides a space for healthy social and academic support every day. At Koa we ensure that everyone is seen and everyone is heard. Our Pods create accountability and build confidence, letting students work at their own pace while having constant and individualised support from a teacher ensuring high quality educational outcomes as well as students who are curious, confident, and well-prepared for the future.
What is your biggest success?

🎓 Academic Excellence
We have had a 100% Matric Pass Rate, our first matrics finished in 2023 and second cohort in 2024, we are so proud of them!
🏆 Educational innovation and recognition
We were the winners of the 2023 MEST Africa Challenge, a prestigious Pan-African startup competition. This recognition highlights our innovative approach to online education. We have expanded our offerings by launching an Afrikaans virtual campus, catering to a broader range of learners. We are now in the process of opening an East Africa campus. We're excited to be able to offer quality, innovative education to students no matter where they are based.
📈 Sustained Growth
Since its launch, Koa Academy has experienced an average monthly enrollment growth of 18%, reaching 650 students. This growth reflects our commitment to providing high-quality, individualized online education.

What has been your biggest hurdle?
Our biggest hurdle has been building public understanding and trust in the concept of online learning. When we launched, online schooling was still a relatively new and unfamiliar idea for many South African families. We quickly realised that before we could grow, we had to first educate the public about what online learning is—and more importantly, what it can be when done well.
It wasn't enough to explain the mechanics of learning online; we had to show the depth and quality of the education we offer. A major part of that challenge was clearly communicating our unique value: Koa provides a highly engaging, personalised learning experience that goes far beyond simply moving lessons onto a screen. Through small Pods, dedicated teachers, and daily interaction, we’ve demonstrated that online school can be just as connected, rigorous, and meaningful as traditional schooling—if not more so.
This journey of public education and differentiation has been crucial to our growth and credibility, and we continue to lead the way in shaping perceptions of online education in South Africa.
