ON THE SPARROW DAYCARE
What does your company do?
We educate, train and care for children and young adults with multiple disabilities.
We offer the following services to disabled children and adults:
1. Feed 2 meals daily to the students as some of the students depend on the centre for meals due to the severity of poverty in the homes of the students. We also send food parcels to unemployed families of our students
2. Reading and writing in 2 languages
3. Mathematics
4. Computer skills and graphic designing
5. Life skills development
6. Social skills development through team building activities and excursions
7. Physiotherapy
8. Speech therapy
9. Helping disabled teenagers and adults open their own businesses so as to help them be independent and also create jobs for unemployed people.
10. Training and employment of adults with disabilities as volunteers so to prepare them for the working world.
11. Sewing skills
12. Bricklaying skills
13. Cooking and baking skills
What is your biggest success?
1. In 2017 Nedbank sponsored us with a fully furnished Edutainer classroom
2. PPC cement built us 2 toilets that cater to students with physical disabilities
3. Receiving the 2024 Herald Citizens Award for the work we do
What has been your biggest hurdle?
1. Using a residential home to run our school where space is a challenge and not being able to accommodate more students who need our services.
2. Having no transportation hinders most of our students from attending school
3. Having no funding limits our capabilities, but we do what we can with what we have
4. Running out of food to feed our students who come from poor unemployed families
