The New Dawn RS Kwakwa trading as The New Dawn Poultry Farm
What does your company do?
The New Dawn Poultry Farm is a woman-led agri-business that produces and supplies fresh eggs and broiler chickens. Based in rural Limpopo, we provide affordable, high-quality poultry products to local households, informal traders, and small shops. Our mission is to support food security while creating employment and empowering youth and women in agriculture.
What is your biggest success?
Our biggest success has been transforming a small backyard operation into a recognized rural enterprise that feeds our community and empowers others. We’ve gained national and international media exposure, including features on SABC 1’s Working Land, Food for Mzansi, and U.S.-based platforms. We’ve presented our work to ministers, the Premier of Limpopo, and ambassadors from 18 countries. This recognition has opened doors for partnerships and inspired many young people especially women to pursue farming. Despite limited resources, we’ve built a trusted local brand and proven that rural youth can lead successful agri-businesses with innovation and passion.
What has been your biggest hurdle?
Our biggest hurdle has been infrastructure. While we now own farmland, it lacks essential services like electricity, water, fencing, and proper poultry housing. A recent hailstorm damaged our structures and led to losses, showing how vulnerable we still are. As a young black woman in a rural area, accessing funding has been difficult, and many opportunities are not tailored to micro-enterprises like ours. Despite these setbacks, we’ve remained committed rebuilding with community support and seeking grants, partnerships, and mentorship. These challenges have only strengthened our resolve to build a fully functional, scalable, and resilient poultry enterprise.
