Young Gal Inner Child
What does your company do?
Young Gal Innerchild is a women-led nonprofit and social enterprise that provides holistic development programs for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW). We focus on mental wellness education, career guidance, life skills development, and financial literacy — creating safe, supportive spaces where young people can build emotional resilience, discover their potential, and prepare for meaningful futures.
Our programs are delivered in schools, churches, and youth hubs, designed to be community-based, practical, and youth-centered. We aim to close gaps in mental health awareness, career preparedness, and personal development, especially in underserved communities. By meeting AGYW where they are, we help them grow into confident, informed, and empowered individuals.
What is your biggest success?
Our greatest achievement has been building a trusted presence in our community within a short time, creating safe, impactful spaces for over 300 adolescent girls and young women to engage in mental wellness and career development. Since launching in July 2023, we’ve delivered programs in schools, churches, and youth hubs — tackling issues like emotional resilience, anxiety, and lack of direction among youth.
A key milestone was partnering with Lifeline Durban to offer psychosocial support, allowing us to extend care beyond education into real emotional healing. We've also amplified our message through a radio interview, reaching broader audiences and reducing stigma around mental health.
What makes this achievement powerful is not just the numbers — it's the feedback, the visible growth in confidence among participants, and the recognition we’ve received from educators and community leaders. It proves that with the right support, grassroots initiatives can create lasting change.
What has been your biggest hurdle?
Our biggest hurdle has been securing consistent funding to run sustainable programs — particularly in affording qualified professionals to support the psychosocial needs of the young people we serve, and training volunteers to facilitate peer support groups. This challenge is why our partnership with Lifeline Durban has been such a milestone, as it enabled us to offer quality psychosocial support through experienced professionals.
As a startup nonprofit, breaking into the sector and building credibility takes time. While we’ve seen many community needs and service gaps, accessing the necessary resources to respond effectively hasn’t always been easy. Still, we remain grounded in our purpose — knowing that every impactful organisation once began as a small, determined initiative. We are deeply grateful for the support we’ve received so far and remain committed to growing our internal capacity to reach more young people with care, consistency, and impact.
