Catch-Up: 2023 Rising Star

Amanda Sibiya, Branding Africa

It’s been a year since Amanda Sibiya won the Rising Star Award. She reflects on the big day and what it meant for her and her brand.

She went from being an entrepreneur to being an award-winning entrepreneur, and that shift is profound, Amanda says.

The awards event was brimming with inspiring women from various industries, Amanda recalls. “I felt a mix of nerves and excitement as they played the finalists’ videos.” Despite her nerves, Amanda was honoured to be among such talented individuals. “Honestly, I didn’t expect to hear my name when they

announced the winner for the Rising Star category. When they called my name, it felt surreal – I think I was in a state of disbelief for a moment. Even now, the memory feels like a dream.”

Winning the award has had a profound impact on her life. “It forced me to see myself as someone worthy of recognition, which has boosted my confidence immensely,” she says. “I started this journey at a young age and often questioned whether I was on the right path; I even considered dusting off my CV and getting a fulltime job. This award has convinced me not to give up – not only for myself but for anyone else on the verge of quitting.”

Her mother, her biggest fan, and her plus-one for the award ceremony, was naturally overjoyed. “You would swear it was her name that had been called, she was so excited. After seeing me work so hard over the past decade, my family and friends felt it was high time I was celebrated in such a significant way.”

The title of Rising Star has been a game-changer for Amanda and Branding Africa, and their mission to deliver people-centred experiences designed to meet the unique strategic business goals of African brands. “Colleagues and partners now see me as someone who has been recognised by major brands.” This visibility has not only attracted more clients but has also encouraged Amanda to be bolder in her business strategies. “We are not just building a business; we’re also shaping futures.”

Winning the award has brought new opportunities for collaboration. Amanda has worked with Marcia Monareng, the winner of the Readers’ Choice Award, and forged valuable friendships with other winners and finalists. “The camaraderie and mutual support we share is incredibly uplifting,” she says.

Looking ahead, Amanda is filled with a sense of purpose. She continues to inspire others through speaking engagements and industry events, sharing her experience and insights. Her advice to aspiring award-winners is clear and powerful: “Get ready for it – this award is more than you might think. Embrace the journey and make the most of every moment.”
